Sukarno and Mohammed Hatta declare independence. Sukarno becomes President and Hatta Vice-President of the Republic of Indonesia. The Netherlands is initially unable to accept the loss of the colony. It wins the military battle but loses the political war when pressure from the United States forces it to transfer sovereignty in 1949.
